How to Edge Band with Pre-Glued Edge Banding109

Edge banding is an essential process in furniture making, as it provides a finished look to the edges of panels and protects them from moisture and wear. Pre-glued edge banding is a convenient option that saves time and effort, as the adhesive is already applied to the banding. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to edge band with pre-glued edge banding:

Materials Required:- Pre-glued edge banding
- Electric iron or edge bander
- Utility knife or edge trimmer
- Sandpaper or sanding block
- Tack cloth

Step 1: Prepare the Panel- Ensure that the edges of the panel are clean, smooth, and free of any dust or debris.
- Slightly sand the edges to create a better bond for the edge banding.

Step 2: Apply the Pre-Glued Edge Banding- Cut the pre-glued edge banding to the desired length.
- Remove the protective film from one side of the edge banding.
- Align the edge banding with the edge of the panel and press it firmly into place.

Step 3: Iron or Edge Band the Banding- If using an electric iron, set it to a medium heat setting.
- Place the iron on the edge banding and move it along the length of the panel, applying even pressure.
- Hold the iron in place for several seconds to allow the adhesive to melt and bond the edge banding to the panel.
- If using an edge bander, follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the edge banding.

Step 4: Trim the Excess Banding- Once the edge banding is bonded, use a utility knife or edge trimmer to trim off any excess material.
- Hold the knife or trimmer at a 45-degree angle to the edge of the panel and carefully trim the banding flush with the surface.

Step 5: Sand and Finish- Lightly sand the edges of the panel to smooth any rough edges or unevenness.
- Apply a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris.
- Apply a finishing touch, such as paint, stain, or varnish, to match the rest of the furniture piece.

Tips:- Use a sharp utility knife or edge trimmer to ensure a clean cut.
- For curved panels, use a flexible edge banding or a hot air gun to heat and bend it around the curves.
- If the adhesive on the edge banding is not strong enough, apply additional adhesive to the edges of the panel before applying the banding.
- Practice on scrap pieces before applying the edge banding to your actual furniture piece.
