How to Apply Edge Banding Yourself [With Pictures]243

Edge banding is a thin strip of material that is applied to the exposed edges of plywood, particleboard, or MDF to give it a finished look. It can also be used to protect the edges from damage. Edge banding is available in a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and metal. It comes in rolls of varying widths and can be applied with a variety of tools and techniques.

Tools and Materials* Edge banding
* Iron or edge bander
* Trim router or flush trim bit
* Sandpaper
* Wood filler (optional)

Instructions

1. Clean the edge of the workpiece.

Remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the edge of the workpiece. This will help the edge banding to adhere properly.

2. Apply the edge banding.

There are two main ways to apply edge banding: with an iron or with an edge bander.
If you are using an iron, set it to a medium heat setting. Place the edge banding on the edge of the workpiece and press down with the iron. Move the iron along the edge, keeping it pressed down firmly. You can also buy an edge bander like ours to do the job.

3. Trim the edge banding.

Once the edge banding has been applied, you need to trim it flush with the edge of the workpiece. This can be done with a trim router or a flush trim bit. If you are using a trim router, be sure to use a sharp bit and make sure the router is set to the correct height. If you are using a flush trim bit, be sure to use a sacrificial fence to prevent the bit from damaging the workpiece.

4. Sand the edge banding.

Once the edge banding has been trimmed, you need to sand it to smooth out any rough edges. Start with a coarse sandpaper and gradually work your way to a finer sandpaper. Be sure to sand in the direction of the grain.

5. Fill any gaps.

If there are any gaps between the edge banding and the workpiece, you can fill them with wood filler. Apply the wood filler with a putty knife and let it dry completely. Once the wood filler is dry, sand it smooth.

Tips* Use a sharp blade when cutting the edge banding. This will help to prevent the edge banding from tearing or fraying.
* If you are using an iron to apply the edge banding, be sure to use a non-stick soleplate. This will help to prevent the edge banding from sticking to the iron.
* If you are using a trim router to trim the edge banding, be sure to use a sharp bit and make sure the router is set to the correct height.
* If you are using a flush trim bit, be sure to use a sacrificial fence to prevent the bit from damaging the workpiece.
* Sand the edge banding in the direction of the grain. This will help to prevent the edge banding from tearing or fraying.
* Fill any gaps between the edge banding and the workpiece with wood filler. This will help to seal the edges and prevent them from damage.
