How to Edge Band with Edging Tapes22
Edging tapes are a great way to add a touch of style and protection to your furniture. They come in a variety of materials and colors, so you can find the perfect match for your project. Plus, they're relatively easy to install, so you can do it yourself at home.
What you'll need* Edging tape
* Contact cement
* A sharp knife
* A utility knife
* A ruler or measuring tape
* A sanding block
* A clean cloth
Instructions1. Measure and cut the edging tape. Start by measuring the length of the edge you want to cover. Then, add 2 inches (5 cm) to the measurement. This will give you enough tape to wrap around the edge and create a small overlap. Cut the tape to the desired length.
2. Apply contact cement to the edging tape. Use a thin, even coat of contact cement to the back of the edging tape. Be sure to apply the cement to the entire surface of the tape, including the ends.
3. Apply the edging tape to the edge of the furniture. Align the edging tape with the edge of the furniture. Press the tape firmly into place, starting in the center and working your way out towards the ends. Be sure to apply even pressure along the entire length of the tape.
4. Trim the excess tape. Once the tape is in place, use a sharp knife to trim the excess tape from the ends. Be careful not to cut too close to the edge of the furniture.
5. Sand the edge of the tape. Use a sanding block to sand the edge of the tape until it is smooth and flush with the surface of the furniture. Be sure to sand in the direction of the grain of the wood.
6. Wipe the edge of the tape clean. Use a clean cloth to wipe away any dust or debris from the edge of the tape.
Tips* If you're using a thick edging tape, you may need to use a router to create a rabbet in the edge of the furniture. This will help to create a more secure bond between the tape and the furniture.
* If you're having trouble getting the edging tape to stick, you can use a heat gun to soften the cement. Be careful not to overheat the cement, or it will become brittle and difficult to work with.
* If you make a mistake, don't worry! You can simply peel off the edging tape and start over.
